1. Schedule an Annual HVAC Tuneup
If your HVAC equipment isn’t running properly, this can jeopardize the quality of your indoor air. Each piece of equipment should be given a tune up by a qualified technician once or twice a year. If you haven’t had one in the past 12 months, now is the perfect time.
2. Clean or Replace the Air Filter
Your system’s air filter helps keep harmful particulates out of your air by capturing them and preventing them from being recirculated. This filter should be checked at least once per month because it can fill up quickly, which hurts the equipment’s performance. On average, you’ll be replacing the filter every 30 to 90 days.
3. Switch to Microfiber Cloths
For many years, people turned primarily to feather dusters to wipe dust off of various surfaces around their homes. However, feather dusters often spread a large amount of dust into the air, which negates what you’re trying to achieve. You should be using microfiber cloths instead, because of their ability to capture particulates.
4. Professionally Clean Air Ducts Every 5 Years
It only takes a few years for dust to accumulate within your ducts, which is then redistributed throughout your home every time you turn on your HVAC equipment. Hiring a professional to clean them out every five years is a great way to help maintain your indoor air quality.
5. Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
Normal cleaning products fill your air with chemicals that negatively affect your home’s indoor air quality. Luckily, for anyone who wants to “go green,” there are eco-friendly cleaning products on the market that perform the same but won’t fill your air with pollutants.
