Don’t Risk a Flooded Basement!
Generators and sump pumps are two of the most helpful devices you can have during a storm. If you depend on a sump pump to keep your basement from flooding, unexpected power failures could leave you vulnerable to major property damage. Ace Hardware Home Services helps to prevent property loss and replacement costs by linking sump pump systems to a dedicated battery backup—or connecting them to standby generators. Contact us today to spec out a system for your home.
Things To Check Before Calling for Repair Service
Backup generators rely on a gas engine and a battery/charging system for starting. Annual maintenance can help keep your generator serviced and ready when you need it. However, if your generator failed to start during a power outage, or if it is not powering on during its weekly self test, there are a few things you can check. A simple fix might be enough to restore operation. Or a major service may be in order. Either way, we’re here to help!
Here are a few quick things you can check before calling for generator service:

Cleaning Battery Connections or Charging Dead Batteries
Just like your car, your home backup generator needs a battery to start. Sometimes, when batteries sit for a long period of inactivity (like generators often do), the battery can lose charge and will not be able to start the generator when it is needed. You may be able to recharge the battery, or it may need replacement, depending on how low the charge is. Our service team can test your battery to make sure it is in working condition.

Check the Fuel System
Often, a lawn mower or snow blower will need servicing after a period of inactivity. Old gasoline or bad spark plugs can often prevent these engines from starting, and generators are no different. Replacing old spark plugs and oil filter replacement as well as a general tune up is often necessary if your generator system has not been activated in a while. Our service team can perform a complete checkup and tune up if your generator needs service.

Control Boards
Sometimes, even though your generator might be in good mechanical condition, it still might not switch on correctly. This might involve a problem with wiring or the control board system. Although it is not a common fault, it can happen from time to time, and usually specialty electronic diagnostic equipment is necessary to find the fault. Our service team is fully qualified to service many of the major generator brands, including Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and Generac*.
