Tankless Water Heaters

Overview

Why Go Tankless?

Tankless water heaters offer a proven alternative to common storage tank water heaters. Storage tank water heaters store between 40 and 120 gallons of water at a time. They constantly reheat that water regardless of how much is needed, which can be inefficient.

A tankless water heater, also called an “on-demand” water heater, only heats water when you turn on the hot water tap. A powerful gas or electric heater kicks on and instantly heats water running through coils in the unit. Since water is only heated when you need it, you save on the costs associated with constantly heating and reheating a large tank of water. Tankless water heaters can accommodate the needs of large families and commercial buildings, and they can be adjusted for temperature just like storage tank water heaters.

Tankless water heaters have been in use for decades now, and they provide a safe and reliable way to use less energy. They are also smaller than standard water heaters, which can save space in new construction applications.

Tankless Hot Water Heater System Maintenance

Just like any other appliance that uses water, tankless water heaters are subject to scale (hard deposits of calcium and other minerals) buildup. This buildup can slow the flow of water through the components of the heater, causing it to work harder than it should.

The short-term consequences of scale buildup can lead to increased cost to produce hot water. Long term, this can damage the internal workings of the tankless water heater and ultimately cause the heat exchanger to fail.

Regular servicing of a tankless hot water heater can reduce and remove scale buildup and extend the life of its heat exchanger for many years. With appropriate maintenance, a tankless water heater can often last around 20 years.

Maintenance requirements on a tankless hot water system will be affected by the volume of hot water usage, mineral content (hardness) of your home’s water, and the temperature setting on your tankless heater.
