Replacing or Installing a Pressure Reducing Valve
Plumbing code requires your home’s water pressure to be between 40 and 80 PSI for proper functioning. Your faucets, shower heads, and every appliance that uses water is designed to function within this range of pressure. Higher water pressure may cause problems over time that will damage fixtures and pipes, increasing their risk of their failure and water damage.
Symptoms of a Failing PRV
If your home is equipped with a PRV, look for the following signs of malfunction:

Low Pressure
The first sign of a failing PRV may be a decrease in water pressure in your home’s plumbing system. Look for adequate pressure when one fixture is in use, but dropping pressure when a second is turned on.

Noises
Strange noises can also be a sign of a weakening PRV. Listen for a squealing sound, or a humming or knocking when you turn on faucets.

High Pressure
Sudden bursts of high water pressure and a water hammer can also indicate a failing PRV. A water hammer is a banging noise inside the wall when a faucet is turned off.

Leaking
You may notice a saturated spot near the valve box on the exterior of your home. Look for standing water inside the box (which has a round or rectangular green lid). If your valve box is buried, your PRV is likely 10 years old or more. In this case, we recommend you call us to find your PRV and inspect it.

Replacing or Installing Emergency Shut Off Valves
Plumbing codes and common practices in a particular region determine the placement of shut-off valves. In many parts of the country, a suburban home usually has two primary shut-off valves - one located at the city water meter and the other near where the main water supply enters the house.
When the water is turned off at the water meter, it will typically shut down water supply to the entire property. But if water is only turned off at the main house water valve, the irrigation and/or fire suppression system will probably still be on.
